Make good use of the sun
Libby Haim, Published on August 2019
Many times, when we hear people talk about the sun in a health context, they have negative things to say about it. And now, when it’s the middle of the summer, you might be hearing those things pretty often. But while too much sun might have a negative effect on our physical health, being exposed to the sun can have an amazing effect on our mental health.
Here’s a useful summer tip: make the best of it!
So, how does the sun affect our mood, and what other benefits does it have?
Serotonin
Basically, the mood Benefits of the sun have to do with a hormone called serotonin. When we’re exposed to the sun, it makes our brains release higher levels of serotonin, which improves our mood and makes us feel more relaxed. Low levels of serotonin can even lead to depression. In fact, light therapy (also called phototherapy) is a pretty popular treatment for Depression
Other Benefits
Other than improving our mood, the sun can help with other things as well. The vitamin D that our body creates while we’re exposed to the sun builds stronger bones. It can also help with different skin problems, like psoriasis and eczema.
So go get some sunlight (but don’t forget to wear sunscreen)!
