The evolution of swimsuits

OFEK HAGAG, Published on August 2019

Summer vacation is finally here, and so is swimsuit season. There is nothing like spending a day at the beach with some friends and cold drinks. These days, there are endless shapes of swimsuits — one-piece, two-piece, long sleeves, open back — you name it. Today, it’s pretty easy to try on different types to see which one works best for you. However, in the last 100 years women’s swimsuits have gone through many changes.

People usually liked to wear something light when they went to the beach. However, the definition of “light” hasn’t always been the same. For example, in the early 1900s, women used to wear a “sea-side walking dress.” This dress was big and long with long Sleeves and a big skirt part. It was nothing like the Light dresses we wear to the beach these days.

Over the years, there have been many different designs of that dress. Each design was trying to make it a little more beach-friendly. Things started to really change around the year 1916. Up until then, women had specific dresses they wore when they went to the beach, but most of them didn’t have special clothes to really swim in. Well, technically they could go into the water wearing those dresses, but I don’t think it would have been a lot of fun.

1916 was the year when swimsuits for women became a real thing. They had no Sleeves and looked a little like today’s one-piece swimsuit, only with shorts on the bottom. Still, the shorts couldn’t be very short. In the US, the shorts on women’s swimsuits had to be a certain length. If a woman was seen wearing shorts that were shorter than that, she could have been fined. What can I say? Feminism wasn’t a big deal at the time.

Years went by and things changed a little again around the 1930s. Swimsuits at the time had a tighter design and were made from synthetic fabrics that take less time to dry.

The first bikini showed up in Paris in 1946, but it took time until it became popular. Not many girls wanted to wear it because they thought it was too revealing. Bikinis became something you saw in almost every magazine and on every beach only around the 1970s. After that, people were free to wear and design pretty much any swimsuit they wanted.

And what's next for swimsuits? Well, at first it looked to me like people had already thought of everything and there is nothing new to create. Then I found a “towelkini” online. The towelkini is a combination of a swimsuit, a beach towel and a beach dress all in one! Now I feel like the potential is endless. I can’t wait to see what we could be wearing for a day at the beach in a few years.
