New phrases to text your friends
Elizabeth Zakaim, Published on August 2019
Internet slang became well known when people started texting each other and writing a lot online. It became more common to make up abbreviations for words and phrases, because they are easier to type. You probably already know the basic internet slang that’s already out there, like LOL and TBT, but there are new Phrases being created all the time. Here are some other Phrases that you could use in your next online chat:
AMA: Ask Me Anything
You can say this if the person you’re talking to wants to ask you a question. By saying that they can ask you anything, you say that you are ready to listen to whatever they have to say.
TFW: That Feeling When
This phrase can be used when people want to talk about a well-known emotion that other people can relate to. How do you use it in a sentence? For example, you can say, “TFW someone you just met remembers your name — it makes you feel important!” The people who read this sentence probably also feel happy if someone remembers their name.
DM: Direct Message
When people say “DM me” it means they want you to directly message them in a private chat. This can be on Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Snapchat, or any other chat you use. People might ask you to Direct message them if they have something they only want to share with you.
FOMO: Fear of Missing Out
This is a really useful phrase. It talks about the feeling you get when you’re worried about being left out of something fun that your friends are doing. For example, if you have to study for a test, but all your friends are going to see a movie. Then, you might feel FOMO. You might try to make yourself feel better by texting your friends while they’re out, or asking them to send you pictures. People think that the only way to not have FOMO is to make sure that you don’t miss out the next time. But there’s also another option: create your own fun anytime you can.
ROFL: Rolling on the Floor Laughing
This is the new way to say LOL. When you’re rolling on the floor laughing, that Means that the thing someone wrote was very funny. If you say LOL, you might also think that the message was funny, but ROFL Means that you laughed even harder. Some people use ROFL even if they didn’t laugh that hard, but don’t be one of those people who use the phrase too much. Save it for special occasions when you really think that something is hilarious.
