Does sharing a meme with someone really mean you’re friends?

Elizabeth Zakaim, Published on April, 2019

New Kinds of Friendships

These days, it seems that relationships and friendships have changed. They have changed mostly because of texting and social media. Before the days of Facebook and Instagram, people had to call each other on the phone and meet each other in person to get to know each other.

But now, things are different. Many people have friends that they follow on Facebook or Instagram –– and they send each other memes and funny posts all the time! But, is that what friendship is all about? The answer to that can be a little complex.

Know the Difference

Some virtual friendships might turn into real-life friendships, and that’s amazing. But sometimes, people just want to be social media friends or meme-friends, and that’s all. Make sure that you don’t expect more from the relationship than they want to give. If they are not interested in more than that, it might be best to accept it.

It’s important to have friends who will be there for you when you are feeling sad, and offer you help when you need advice. There is nothing wrong with virtual friendships — and they can be a lot of fun. Some of them remain meme-friendships; and others can turn into something real and meaningful. But make sure you know the difference between your meme-friends and your real friends. A real friendship is one that answers your deep emotional needs. So when you have a friendship like that, don’t forget to nurture it
