Hugging is really, really good for you.

LINOY DORON, Published on in the אנגלית לחטיבת הביניים

Who doesn’t like being hugged? I would say: no one. There’s nothing like a good hug when we feel lonely or tired or just in a need of some love. But other than just being nice and fun, it turns out that hugs are also very good for our health. Here are some of the amazing Health benefits of this simple action.

Hugs make your Immune system stronger

Did you know that people who get hugs have a lower chance to catch a cold? Even if you have already caught one — it seems that getting more hugs helps you heal faster. Hugs activate our thymus gland, which helps strengthen our immune system, and keeps us healthier longer.

Hugs help you relax

Hugs also lower our level of stress. When facing stressful situations in life, one of the best things we can do is ask for a hug. The act of hugging relaxes our muscles, and can even make physical pain go away. One thing that causes this relaxing effect is the positive effect that hugs have on our blood circulation.

Hugs get you in a better mood

Another great thing a hug can do for us is to improve our mood. When we hug, the brain releases serotonin, which causes happiness. Other than that, hugs also help release oxytocin, also called “the love hormone.” Higher oxytocin levels help us feel fewer negative emotions such as anger, fear and loneliness.

Hugs Improve self-esteem

Apparently, the memory of the hugs our mom and dad give us when we are young stays with us for the rest of our lives. Those hugs are connected to the feeling of being loved, and therefore, they are also connected to self-love. This is why being hugged improves our self-esteem.

 Hugs keep you alive

Not only are hugs good for our mental and physical Health — we also need them to stay alive. Both people and animals have a higher chance to survive if they are hugged more as babies. Other than needing them to Survive kids need hugs in order to develop: kids who are not hugged take more time to learn how to walk, talk and read. But don’t worry! Keep a minimum of 6 minutes of hugging every day, and you should be fine.

Although hugs have all of the amazing Benefits that we just talked about — sadly, most people don’t get a lot of them. One third of people are not hugged on a daily basis! The thing is — in order for hugs to really have such great effects on our Health they need to be given by someone who is close to us. It seems that emotional closeness is a key factor when it comes to good, effective hugging. It is also important to remember that hugs have as much of a positive effect on the person giving them as on the person getting them. This is wonderful news!

If you are the kind of person that hugs a lot — just keep doing what you’re doing. If you haven’t been hugging that much so far — now would be a great time to start.
