La Tomatina: Spain’s fun tomato fight.
Liat Zohar, Published on in the אנגלית לחטיבת הביניים
The people in Spain really know how to have a good time! On August 30th people meet in Buñol, Spain, to throw tomatoes at each other. They do this for fun as part of a celebration called La Tomatina — a Celebration that happens every year.
This tradition started back in August of 1945 when people in town went to see a parade. Two boys decided to join the Parade when they weren’t supposed to, and accidentally made someone fall. The person who fell was very angry and he kicked a basket of vegetables. More people got angry and started throwing the vegetables at each other in the middle of the street!
People wanted to make a Tradition out of this accident. They started bringing their own tomatoes from home and throwing them at each other. At first, the police did not let La Tomatina happen. But after a few years, it became a funny Tradition that people now love.
Now, thousands of people come every year to join in on the fun. People who go make sure to wear old clothes that they don’t mind getting dirty and wet with tomatoes. They also wear goggles to protect their eyes from tomato juice. By the end, the streets are full of tomatoes!
Do you think you would be able to join a tomato fight? Sounds like fun!
