The sports movies that you have to watch

Linoy Doron, Published on February, 2019 in the אנגלית לחטיבת הביניים

Since there are no cool new movies coming out this month, I thought we’d do something a little different this time: go back in time! Well, not literally go back in time (sadly, I don’t own a time machine). I’m talking about the next-best-thing — recommending movie classics!

So, I’m proud to announce a special Cinema Zone-Sports Zone mashup: Here are the four top sports movies I think you really have to watch.

Bend it Like Beckham  — 2002

This is totally one of my all-time favorites.   Most of you weren’t even born yet when it came out — so you might have missed

  1. Bend it  Like  Beckham tells  the  story  of  a  young  Indian  girl named  Jess  (or,  in  her  full  name,  Jesminder).  Jess  lives  in London with her very-conservative family, and she has a secret

love: soccer . Jess’s family won’t let her play the game because she’s a woman (unfair, I know). But she keeps doing it

anyway, in secret. One day, Jess meets Jules — another female soccer player who plays for a local team. From that point on, Jess’ life will never be the same.

Here’s another sports classic from the same year. But this time, it’s not about soccer — it’s about dancing. Even if you haven’t watched Step Up, I’m pretty sure you’ve heard about it. It was such a big hit, it has four sequels! The movie

tells the story of Tyler, a boy from a poor Neighborhood and  Jenna,  a  rich,  pretty  girl  who  seems  to  have  it  all. While  doing  community service at  Jenna’s  high  school, Tyler discovers his love for dancing. Tyler and Jenna end

up being dance partners, even though they don’t really want

  1. The movie is full of beautiful dance routines and has an amazing soundtrack. Oh, and there’s also a love story.

Space Jam — 1996

Okay, this is by far the oldest movie on the list. One of the coolest things about this movie is the fact that it mixes live- action with animation! And not just any animation — Looney

Tunes animation. And it stars none other than legendary NBA player Michael Jordan. Jordan left the NBA in 1993, and made a comeback in 1995. Space Jam presents an alternative Version to that real-life story. And that alternative Version is filled with magic, humor, and even some animated

romance. Just talking about it makes me want to go watch

it again. You know what — I think I’ll go watch it right now.

She’s the Man  — 2006

This one is a little bit newer. Well, it’s from 13 (!) years ago

(my God, I’m so old) — but still. Much like Bend it Like Beckham

— She’s the Man is also about a woman who isn’t allowed to play soccer. But it’s also really different. A modern version of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night — the movie tells the story of Viola Hastings. Viola really loves playing soccer, but she has no team to play for. Her twin brother is about to start at a new college, but instead, he goes away for a few weeks. Since no one in her brother’s college knows what he looks like yet, V has a crazy idea. She’s going to dress up as her brother, and the boys-only college soccer team!
